Summer is the perfect time for making memories with the whole family—including the furry, four-legged members! Whether you're heading to the beach, camping in the mountains, or road-tripping across states, bringing your pet along can add joy, comfort, and excitement to your adventure. But traveling with pets (especially when kids are also in tow) does require a little extra planning. Here are our top tips for a smooth, stress-free, and tail-waggingly fun summer vacation with your pet.
1. Plan Pet-Friendly Accommodations
Before you hit the road, make sure your lodging is pet-friendly. Many hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds welcome pets, but policies vary—some charge extra fees or limit the number of pets. Look for places that offer pet amenities like walking areas, treats at check-in, or even pet-sitting services. Apps like BringFido or Airbnb’s “pets allowed” filter make it easier than ever to find a great spot.
2. Visit the Vet Before You Go
A quick trip to the vet before vacation ensures your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and in good health for travel. If you’re crossing state lines or traveling internationally, you may need health certificates or proof of rabies shots. Ask your vet for a copy of medical records just in case, and make sure your pet’s microchip info is current.
3. Pack a Pet Travel Kit
Just like your kids need their own bags of snacks and toys, so does your pet! Include the essentials:
- Food and water (plus bowls)
- Leash, collar, and ID tags
- Waste bags and a litter box (for cats)
- Favorite toys and a blanket for comfort
- Medications, if needed
- A pet first aid kit
Pro tip: Bring extra water and a collapsible bowl to keep your pet hydrated on the go, especially in hot weather.
4. Practice Safe Car Travel
If you're road-tripping, make sure your pet is secure. Use a pet seatbelt, travel crate, or car hammock to keep them safe and comfortable. Avoid letting them roam freely in the car—it can be distracting and dangerous.
Plan for frequent stops (every 2-3 hours) so your pet can stretch, relieve themselves, and get a bit of exercise. Kids will appreciate the breaks too! Never leave your pet alone in a hot car, even for a few minutes—temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
5. Beat the Heat
Summer sun is great for beach days and BBQs, but it can be risky for pets. Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening) and always provide shade and water. Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you’re hitting the beach, check if it’s dog-friendly—and don’t forget to rinse off salty water or sand afterward.
6. Keep Everyone Entertained
If you’re traveling with both kids and pets, finding activities that suit all ages can be a win-win. Look for family-friendly hikes, pet-welcoming attractions, or even dog parks near your destination. Let the kids take turns being “pet helper” for the day—it gives them a sense of responsibility and keeps your pet feeling loved and included.
7. Embrace the Adventure
The best part of bringing your pet along? You get to share all the fun moments—from goofy car selfies to campfire cuddles—with every member of your family. Sure, there may be a few extra stops or a little more fur on the car seats, but the memories you’ll make are worth it.
So pack those treats, load up the cooler, and hit the road! With a bit of preparation and a lot of love, your summer getaway can be an unforgettable experience for everyone—including your pet.
